Volunteering - Gap Years
Taking a Gap Year is a unique opportunity to stand out from the crowd because it demonstrates you have achieved a character-building experience during your time out. For the volunteer it shows the ability to stand on his/her feet and take the initiative in communicating within a foreign environment, overcoming initial barriers of culture and language.
Nowadays universities and employers are seeking people showing exceptional attitudes and skills, such as those you can gain through working in the volunteer sector. Those who have had the chance to spend time abroad know that volunteering is not only about helping to the local community, building a hospital or teaching English, it's about the drive and motivation you will gain which will stay with you throughout your academy studies and career.
When you are choosing what to do during your gap year, it is worth keeping the future in focus but also having in mind that the activities that form our volunteer projects will prove that you are able to communicate in order to work as a part of a team. Travelling long distances also involve planning and strategic thinking - something very important in any work place.
