Volunteering in the educational sector in Peru is a rewarding and without a doubt fun experience!
There is 3 categories of schools in Peru, the private, national and charity sectors. We work mainly in the charity sector to support community development but also work outside school settings in outreach work projects such a VIDA. The VIDA project, promote leadership on young people coming from disadvantage sectors of the population and looks after their cognotive development. We also work with children from WaWa Wasi projects.
Thanks to teachers, staff and volunteers dedication, local students have improved their academic results and young people gain more confidence.
.Local students are eager to engaging into their learning process because they undestand is not easy from a volunteer to adapt inmediately to cultural changes. On the other hand, local teachers are very supportive and apreciate volunteers time when helping in the runing of the educational curricula. Volunteers has been able to get involved in English, maths, geography, sports, arts, music, manual work, information communication technology, or other courses they are interest to get involved.
The Peruvian goverment sponsor a social project called WaWa Wasi(in Quechua language means children's house) aimed for volunteers who are interested in working with children age 5 years old or under. The project WaWa Wasi is spread out nationwide and volunteers will be working alonside local professionals such as nutritionist, social workers, and educational staff to support the personal development of disadvantage children.
An advantage of our volunteer projects is that after your first month or week you will financially contributing to your host family at a lower rate set up by us and decide also the time you want to stay in the project. You can pay either weekly or monthly directly to your host family, for your food and accommodation at not extra cost to us. It means you will be helping actively in the promotion of sustainability for the local community.
After volunteering you will receive a certificate outlining your participation in the local project.

All projects give you the option to take part in one of our our unique
eco-adventure tours.
Accordingly to your Spanish language skills we have set up the following:
Ayllu - For volunteers whose level of Spanish is fluent and can multitask at a school.
Chaski - For those volunteers who need Spanish lessons during their placement to work properly at a school.
Vida - For those volunteers whose Spanish language is basic and can work coaching young people out of school settings.

Ayllu were the basic political unit of pre-Inka and Inka life. These were essentially extended family groups but they could adopt non-related members, giving individual families more security of the land that they farmed. They were usually led by a chief but could have other arrangements. Ayllu were self sustaining units and would educate their own offspring and farm or trade for all the food they ate, except in cases of disaster such as El Nino years when they relied on the Inka storehouse system.
Cost:
This project is ideal for people who already have some knowledge of the Spanish language. Ayllu allows you to participate actively in local schools and to provide some outreach assistance in the local community.
Depending on your level of Spanish, you will assist the local teaching staff in lessons with subjects such as Art, English, Sports, Maths, IT or any other areas of teaching you wish to explore. You will have the opportunity to help out at the local kindergarten or shanty town project also.

Chaski is a name derived from the ancient Inka language, Quechua. Chaski were highly trained runners who delivered messages along thousands of miles through the Andes, vital in maintaining communication across the Inka empire.
Cost:
The Chaski programme allows you to learn Spanish by having lessons with teachers at your volunteering placement school. They will encourage you and develop your communication skills.
This rewarding life experience allows you to participate actively in local schools by assisting with English or other subjects such as Art, Sports, and IT etc.

Vida means LIFE in Spanish language and symbolise a fresh start for the needs of this community
Cost:
Volunteers with the Vida programme will prepare children and teenagers from Ventanilla for the adult world by not just helping to educate them in academia but also providing them with life skills such as co-operation and team work, through social support.
These youngsters are often from families living in extreme poverty and at high social risk. You will be involved in providing a playful educational space which will give the young people a safe alternative to at risk situations, helping to improve the quality of their lives.
The emphasis in on promoting positive attitudes to education. By becoming involved in many aspects of the youngster's development, such as improving their self-esteem, liaising with families where necessary and promoting healthy use of their free time, you will be helping the young people to develop healthy life habits which will allow them to trust themselves outside of the educational environment.
Some of the ways in which the programme promotes these positive attitudes are by organising exciting education activities such as going out in the countryside and craft workshops.
