"When I first arrived at the school, I did have a few initial worries about what I'd be doing. It took a few days for me to get a clear idea of what my role would be. My main role in the school was to run "catch-up" classes for the students who were struggling with English and unlikely to pass the course. I also attended about 90% of English lessons in the secondary school. My role in these lessons varied from week to week, but I was mainly there to support the English teacher. I helped with pronunciation, grammar queries (of both the students and the teacher) and speaking practice."
"I really enjoyed my time at my school. I was made to feel very welcome, and it was obvious how much my time and effort was appreciated by both the teachers and some students. I think it is important to say that I felt a little useless at times. I went to Peru with totally unreasonable expectations of being able to "change the world" in only three months, which was never going to be possible! There are so many challenges facing the community that it will take many years, and many more volunteers, to produce long-term, sustainable improvements."
